ABSTRACT
The author discusses the current threats to the archaeological heritage in Poland which have resulted from recent socio-economic changes. He identifies several groups the first are the obvious external threats (redevelopment, treasure-hunters, agricultural activities). More insidious are the internal conditions within the discipline itself. These include a reactive rather than preventative approach to conservation, lack of generally-agreed policies, lack of understanding in society for the need to preserve the archaeological heritage, lack of a standardised methodology, lack of a consideration of conservation in university programmes, faults in the legislation, and the structure of the conservation services. These points are discussed, before a consideration of the question where help should be sought. The first step must be to regulate the legal and organisational frameworks for archaeological heritage management and the creation by of a national archaeological conservation policy. A vital part of this process must be the expansion of and improvement of access to the sites and monuments records. The integration of the whole archaeological community around the conservation services is a vital need for the future.
