Summary
This catalogue was prepared by the State Service for Protection of Archaeological Monuments and Sites, Department for Poznan Province (KZA), based at Poznan Archaeological Museum. It forms a new presentation of the basic source data on a chosen category of archaeological sites (strongholds in this case) in a modified, more functional way. We address it to the broad spectrum of receipients of archaeological information: professional archaeologists, representatives of related fields, and advanced amateurs/hobbyists.
Collection and retrieval of information about archaeological sites in the Poznan province carried out by the Department was considerably accelerated when computer technology was applied to it in 1986. Soon afterwards it became possible to develop a database system devoted to that aim, named System_AZP. During the following years the system was continually upgraded and modernised, and in 1993 – completely rewritten under the name AZP_Fox. At present the level of its development makes it possible to prepare reports which give easy access to the source data collected so far for a wider range of receipients. In many cases this saves them the necessity of a long and tedious research. The present report integrates the data contained in AZP_Fox system with the results of the project of verifying Greater Poland strongholds, run by the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Science, Poznan Department (mostly already published).
Several innovations were introduced in presenting the data. Instead of just one catalogue of objects arranged according to one chosen criterion (e.g. alphabetically by place names), a whole group of such lists was prepared, all of which are identical as far as their factographic content is concerned but arranged differently. The present work contains six lists arranged according to:
a) place names (list 1)
b) community names (list 2)
c) object numbers on the enclosed maps 1-3
(which are area codes specific for the Polish
Archaeological Record list 3)
d) sheet numbers of 1:10,000 topographic maps (1965 system; list 4)
e) object types (list 5)
f) object chronology (list 6)
The arrangement criterion is displayed in the header of each list. Such a structure ensures that the reader can quickly find any particular site of interest to him according to any criteria without the necessity of searching through the whole list. All the sites from the Poznan province which had been known as strongholds are presented in three groups:
1. Objects positively verified (map 1).
2. Objects previously considered to be strongholds, negatively verified (map 2).
3. Objects previously considered to be strongholds, requiring verification (map 3).
Every object is described with 17 properties relating it to: administrative division, location (within the “1965 System” of the 1:10,000 topographic maps scheme and that of Polish Archaeological Record areas), number of conservator’s decision, history of site research, degree of its recognition, type of strongholds or related site, its chronological position, location of finds, kind and place of documentation repository, basic source literature, state of site maintainance and its present use, conclusions concerning necessary and suggested conservation activities on the site, and additional notes. These data, presented in a table form, comprise a site list of a given group. Every map is accompanied by six such lists, of identical content but – as has already been mentioned – arranged according to different criteria, considered to be the most important for the reader.
