Fontes Archaeologici Posnanienses (Poznań Archaeological Sources) is a standard journal of the Archaeological Museum in Poznań. It has been published annually from 1951, initially as Fontes Praehistorici (Prehistoric Sources), and from 1954 (vol. 4) under its current title.
The objectives of the journal are best characterised in the editorial of volume 1, written by Professor Józef Kostrzewski:
One of the major shortcomings of our science is the lack of source publications, providing information about archaeological material housed in large quantities in our collections. Therefore, the Archaeological Museum in Poznań, in order to facilitate the study of the rich archaeological sources collected for almost one hundred years (from 1875), established the journal which is aimed to publish the descriptions of systematic field research carried out by the Museum and short reports on the Museum’s activities along with the list of new acquisitions…
Over time, thematic and spatial scope of the journal has expanded. Apart from publishing the Museum’s material, the journal releases elaborations, both analytical and synthetic ones, written by the researchers from different institutions and academic centres. In addition it issues theoretical articles and the works of the disciplines associated with archaeology, including history, anthropology, archaeozoology, etc.
Since the first volume, the summaries of articles are translated into other languages. Initially it was French, then German, and currently mainly English. The articles written in foreign languages, on the other hand, are provided with Polish translations.
