The Department focuses on research, archaeological excavations and collecting  artefacts from the Mediterranean zone and Africa, and protection of other collections obtained   outside Europe. Its also  documents prehistoric rock art from north-easternAfrica.

The Department is divided into the following units: Archaeology of Asia and America, Nubiology, Egyptology, Rock Art, Traceology
