After more than one millennium of mobile pastoral lifeway, the mid-2^nd millennium BC witnessed the reappearance of village-based life in a vast area stretching from the Black Sea region, across Caucasia to eastern Anatolia and northwestern Iran. Its manifestation is the emergence of stone-built dwellings clustered in small or middle-sized settlements, some of which are fortified. 

A joint German-Russian project investigates one of the most interesting areas with such architecture in the North Caucasus. Remote sensing, targeted survey and excavation revealed an entirely new cultural landscape of the Bronze Age in this important mountain between Ancient Mesopotamia and the Eurasian steppe zone.
